The Ottawa Heat Wave Prep: Is Your A/C Ready for its First 2026 Run?
As we move into May, Ottawa's weather is famously fickle. We might be wearing light jackets for a walk along the Rideau Canal on Monday, only to be hit by a humid 28°C "flash summer" day by Friday.
For homeowners in Orléans, Kanata, Barrhaven, and across the city, now is the time to transition your HVAC system from "heating mode" to "cooling mode." Waiting until the first humid night to flip the switch is a gamble that often leads to frozen coils, clogged drains, or worse a system that won't turn on at all.
To help you stay cool, we have put together this essential A/C transition checklist to ensure your home stays comfortable and your energy bills stay manageable.
1. The Outdoor Condenser Check
Your outdoor A/C unit (the condenser) has spent the last six months battling Ottawa’s snow, ice, and wind-blown debris. Before you turn it on:
Remove the Cover: If you used a winter cover, ensure it is completely removed. Running a system with a cover on will cause the motor to burn out almost instantly.
Clear the Perimeter: Ensure there is at least 2 feet of clear space around the unit. Trim back any overgrown spring bushes or weeds.
Inspect the Fins: Check the metal fins for debris or "matting" from cottonwood seeds or dirt. A gentle rinse with a garden hose (not a pressure washer!) can help improve efficiency.

2. Inspect the Refrigerant Line Insulation
Look at the two copper lines running from your outdoor unit into your house. One is small and bare; the other is larger and should be covered in black foam insulation.
The Problem: Years of Ottawa’s intense UV rays and freeze-thaw cycles cause this foam to become brittle, crack, and eventually crumble away.
The Impact: If that insulation is missing or damaged, the refrigerant loses its "chill" before it even reaches your home. This makes your A/C work harder and run longer, driving up your monthly hydro bill.
Action: If you see bare copper or crumbling foam, you can pick up a new piece of foam pipe insulation (often called "armaflex") from a local hardware store. It’s a $10 fix that pays for itself in energy savings.

3. The Interior Filter Swap
A dirty furnace filter is the #1 cause of A/C failure. During the winter, your filter worked hard to catch dust and pet dander. If that filter is clogged, air cannot flow across the cooling coils.
The Result: The coils can actually freeze into a block of ice, even when it’s 30°C outside.
Action: Start the season with a fresh, high-quality pleated filter.

4. Clear the Condensate Drain Line
Your A/C doesn't just cool the air; it dehumidifies it. That moisture collects in a tray and flows out through a small plastic drain line.
The Risk: After sitting stagnant all winter, algae or dust can clog this line. When the A/C starts running, that water has nowhere to go and can back up into your furnace or onto your basement floor.
Action: Ensure the drain line is clear and properly routed to your floor drain or condensate pump.

5. The "Test Run" (Do This Today!)
Don’t wait for a heatwave to test the system. Pick a day when it is at least 16°C (60°F) outside and follow these steps:
Set your thermostat to "Cool."
Lower the temperature to a few degrees below the current room temp.
Listen for the outdoor unit to kick in.
Wait 15 minutes and feel the air coming from the vents. It should be crisp and cold.

Feeling Unsure About Your System?
If you’ve just moved into a new home in Stittsville, Rockland, or any other part of Ottawa. Or if your A/C is over 10 years old, the spring transition can be stressful. HVAC systems are complex, and small defects like a failing capacitor or a slow refrigerant leak aren't always obvious to the naked eye.
At Atlas Peak Inspections, we specialize in identifying these "hidden" mechanical issues before they become expensive emergencies. When we perform a full home inspection, we provide:
90-Day Mechanical & Structural Warranty: This covers your A/C and furnace, providing a safety net for the first three months of the season.
Lifetime Appliance Recall Check: We check your A/C model against a database of millions of recalls to ensure your family is safe.
Next Day Report Guarantee: So you have the information you need to make decisions immediately.
Moving into a new home this spring? Let us give you the "Peace of Mind" you deserve before the Ottawa humidity hits.
